Drawing on the qualities of water, earth, fire and air, Elemental considered how forms emerge through material interaction and transformation. Five structurally distinct arrangements of composite cellulose rice paper forms appear to emerge from a thin, loosely folded plastic substrate. The rice paper, shifting between brittle, fluid, tacky, rigid and malleable states, becomes a site of inquiry into the conditions of formation. Water plays a particular role, evoking the relationship between elemental phenomena, the delicate rice-paper membrane and human skin. Through these material correspondences, the boundaries between body, matter and environment become fluid and interdependent. Responding to the architecture, ambient light and shadow, the installation unfolds as an intuitive spatial composition in which material capabilities, chance and intention converge. Informed by Zen principles of simplicity, harmony and balance, the installation invites a quiet, contemplative engagement with space. A single bell chime marks a sensory threshold, while colour, form and subtle spatial relationships invite an embodied response, attuning the senses and gently thinning the skin.
